St. Demetrius' Church, Berat Berat

DETAILS

  • The church of saint... ... (Area)

The Chuch of St. Demetrius is located on the eastern part of the castle, between the inhabited houses, and belongs to the category of the simple post-Byzantine chapels. It has been built over the remains of an older temple, at the end of the 16 century and beginning of the 17 centuries. A porch built later in time surrounds the church on three sides. The church is composed by the naos and the altar alcove. Three doors lead to the main hall, two respectively on the southern and northern side and, the main one, on the western side. The main door is the original wooden door from the first phase of construction.  A date preserved on the late buttress, build on the southern side, states that the church was restored in 1604.

  • The nave (Area)

The interior of the nave is covered in part with frescoes with biblical motifs; with scenes in sizes that fit the dimensions of the church. The outer part of the western side is also covered with fresco. The interior of the church is paved with irregularly placed lime stones and pumice rocks, and the light penetrates through an open window in the ceiling.
